Market close: Shares fall slightly

The sharemarket fell slightly today with the NZSE50 down -0.07% to end the day at 3,318.

Top stock Telecom dropped 1.8% and Fletcher Building lost 0.7%. Contact Energy was down 0.1% after announcing they will have a second power project fast-tracked after the government said it will call in its 540 megawatt Hauauru ma raki wind farm near Raglan.

The retail sector was mixed with Hallenstein Glasson up 1.8%, Michael Hill dropping 4.3% and The Warehouse Group losing 0.9%. Pumpkin Patch closed unchanged.

Among other major gainers, Goodman Fielder jumped 5.9%, New Zealand Oil & Gas increased 5.2%, Pike River Coal advanced 2.8% and Steel & Tube Holding gained 2.2%.

Losers included Geneva Finance down 55.56%, OceanaGold Corporation down 6.10%, and Wellington Drive Technologies down 2.94%.

ING Medical Properties Trust, the investment company that changed its name from Calan Healthcare, was up 3.67% afer announcing operating profit rose 8.4% on increased rental income.

The investment company chaired by Ron Brierley, Guinness Peat Group, was down 3.38%, after it had a first-half loss after writing down the value of its stock holdings.

The Australian share market was little changed today with the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index ending the day 3.7 points, or 0.1%, higher at 5011.2.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 26.62 points, or .23 %, to 11,412.87 and the Nasdaq dropped 3.62 points, or .15%, to 2,361.97.
