Telecom Corp, New Zealand's biggest phone company, gave a NZ$20 million to NZ$30 million contract to India's Tech Mahindra to revamp its retail business.

Tech Mahindra, India's sixth-largest software exporter, will help redesign the way Telecom offers services to its retail customers, increasing the way packages can be bundled, customizing billing and reducing employee time tied up on customer calls.

Customers won't notice changes from the "Next Generation Telecom" program for about two years, Telecom spokesman Ian Bonnar said.

Tech Mahindra is part owned by BT Group and the contract increases Telecom's ties to the UK phone company whose split into separate operating units was overseen by Telecom chief executive Paul Reynolds, then a BT executive. New Zealand's Telecom is undertaking its own operational split under a government edict.

The Pune, India-based telecommunications support company this year won a five-year, US$350 million contract with BT to streamline its application services. BT accounts for about 60% of Tech Mahindra's business, Thomson Financial reported in May.

Telecom shares rose 0.3% to NZ$3.74.
