Market close: Shares close higher

The sharemarket surged upwards today with the NZSE50 up 2.15% to end the day at 3,255.

Top stock Telecom gained 3.7%, Fletcher Building increased 4.9%, and Contact Energy was up 1.5%.

The retail sector was mixed with The Warehouse Group rising 1.0% and Pumpkin Patch advanced 1.4%. But Hallenstein Glasson fell 1.1% and Michael Hill closed unchanged.

Todays biggest gains were Postie Plus Group up 16.67%, Botry-Zen up 15%, L & M Petroleum up 11.11%, AMP up 10.96%, OceanaGold up 10%, Pan Pacific Petroleum up 8% and Sky Network Television jumped 3.6%.

Shares to decline today were Investment Research Group down 28.57%, ProvencoCadmus down 11.76%, BLIS Technologies down 9.09%, Austral Pacific Energy down 7.89% and Sealegs Corporation down 2.63%.

Banks had a stella day with ANZ surging 8.3% and Westpac gaining 4.8%.

Dorchester Finance, a unit of Dorchester Pacific, announced it has suspended interest payments after agreeing to changes to its plans to defer repayments. Dorchester Pacific closed down 25% today.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 rose 216.4 points, or 4.5%, to close at 5020.5 points, while the broader All Ordinaries gained 209.4 points, or 4.3%, to 5050.1.

The Dow rose 368.75, or 3.35%, to 11,388.44.
The S&P 500 index rose 48.57, or 4.03%, to 1,255.08, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 74.80, or 3.40%, to 2,273.90.
