US markets closed higher on Thursday on mountin optimism that a US debt ceiling deal could be reached within days, with discount retailer Walmart Inc. providing additional support after an upbeat annual sales forecast. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 0.34%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were up 0.94% and up 1.51% respectively.
Other key markets ended higher. European stocks closed as follows: the FTSE100 (+0.25%), the Dax 30 (+1.33%), CAC 40 (+0.64%) and the STOXX (+1.20%). In Asia, the Hang Seng and Shanghai indices closed mixed. The key Asian indices ended yesterday as follows: Nikkei 225(+1.60%), HSI (+0.85%) and the Shanghai Composite (+0.40%).
The yield on the US 10 - year note was at 3.648%, while the 2 - year note was at 4.258%. Oil was up to $71.93 per barrel, down 1.24%. The gold price was at US$1960.00 per ounce, down 1.25%.
