The US market closed lower on Monday as crude prices touched multiyear highs, giving rise to heightened inflation fears.

All three major US equity indexes tumbled more than 1% in early trading, but pared losses as they struggled to regain their footing in the wake of the previous week's steep losses.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.77%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were up 0.91% and 1.48% respectively.

Other key markets ended lower. European stocks closed as follows: the FTSE100 (-0.34%), the Dax 30 (-0.77%), CAC 40 (-0.98%) and the STOXX (-0.61%). In Asia, the Hang Seng and Shanghai indices closed higher. The key Asian indices ended yesterday as follows: Nikkei 225(-5.20%), HSI (-1.35%) and the Shanghai Composite (-0.67%).

The yield on the US 10 - year note was at 4.105%, while the 2 - year note was at 3.557%. Oil was up to $86.07 per barrel, down 5.31%. The gold price was at US$5145.09 per ounce, down 0.26%.
