Prominent among business and professional people and public figures who died this year were:

Harold (Jock) Barnes (92), fiery union leader who led the Waterside Workers' Union on a failed 151-day strike in 1951; in Auckland.
Thomas Butson (68), Winton-born one-time editor of the New York Times and author who started his career at the Southland Times in 1949; of pneumonia in the US.
David William Crowe (66), Blenheim-born father of cricketers Jeff and Martin Crowe; of cancer at Auckland.
Joan Christian Davis (100), one of Geraldine's oldest residents and a former mayoress of Nelson; at Timaru.
de Lautour, Geoffrey Bertrand (78), singer and opera director; of a heart attack in Wellington.
Dorothy Whitson Freed (81), Dunedin-born librarian and composer; at Wellington.
Andrew Douglas Strath Heal (28), Wellington-born award-winning journalist; while kayaking at Golden Bay.
Ronald Courtney (Ron) Hemi (67), Whangarei-born former All Black and Waikato rugby player; of cancer in Hamilton.
Martin Jones (59), Bayswater marina developer; of rare lung disease, Auckland.
Bernard Keith (Bernie) Knowles (75), accountant and former Dairy Board general manager and Wool Board managing director.
Edward Roland Lindstrom (89), former sports administrator (especially rowing); at Christchurch.
Dr Maxwell John (Max) Lovie (61), Hastings-born but Wellington-based plastic surgeon; suddenly at Wellington.
James John (Jim) McMath (79), Invercargill-born aviator and among the last of Ord Wingate's Chindits in the Burma Campaign; in Southland.
Samuel Rogerson (Sam) McRae (90), Riversdale-born farmer and pioneer transport operator in western Southland; in Southland.
Pte Leonard William Manning (24), New Zealand soldier; killed in action in East Timor.
Sidney Lewis Moses (93), Auckland-born former managing director of the Maple Furnishing Co; at Karori.
Michael John Noonan (78), Richmond Hill (Sumner)-born radio, film and TV scriptwriter, novelist and playwright; at Brisbane.
Sir Walter Neville Norwood (93), Wellington-born businessman and philanthropist and former chairman of New Zealand Motor Corporation; at Taupo.
Lyndsay Mason (Lyn) Papps (80), former lawyer and professional company director; at Waikanae.
Hugh Lancelot Marshall Peirse (75), economist and former Wool Marketing Corporation and Wool Board "fix-it man;" at Auckland.
Professor Bryan Passmore Philpott (79), Palmerston North-born Keynesian economist and economic forecaster; at Wellington.
