Ballantynes has appointed Mary Devine as managing director, taking over the role in February.
Devine is the former chief executive of EziBuy and Max Fashions and will take over from Richard Ballantyne, who has held the role for 14 years.
He will continue working for the company as a full-time executive director.
Chairman Peter Cox said the appointment comes at a time when the company is about to embark on a new five-year strategic plan and that her experience would prove beneficial for the family-owned business.
"While Mary's background and skills fit perfectly with our future plans, especially in the area of new technology and international brands, we also need someone at the helm who understands and respects the great traditions upon which Ballantynes was established," Cox said.
Devine said she was looking forward to being involved with such a long-established and well-respected business.
"With the many initiatives that are already in place and the opportunities that are on the horizon, Ballantynes is well down the road to cementing its position as the leading department store in New Zealand," she said.
