The volume of log exports through Port Marlborough in the second half of 2001 rose 70% and the trend is expected to continue.

Marlborough has more than 57,000ha planted in pinus radiata forest and over the next two to three years the wood flow in the district is expected to reach 700,000cu m.

In the six months to December 2001 the port enjoyed a revenue boost of 9.6% and pre-tax profit of $2.75 million. In the year to June 2001 revenue was $11 million, providing a pre-tax profit of $5.08 million.

In February 2000 Port Marlborough developed the Shakespeare export berth, now the deepest in New Zealand (16m at low tide). Waimahara Wharf, a 200m multi-purpose berth at Shakespeare Bay, is used by large timber and bulk carriers.
