The 126-room Ibis hotel is being developed by Hamilton Riverview Hotel Ltd, the joint venture company which also owns Novotel Tainui. Hamilton City Council, Tainui Group Holdings and the hotel chain Accor are the main partners.

Tourism Waikato chief executive John Rasmussen said the region was in desperate need of the new hotel.

"There is definitely a need for more accommodation to cater for the city's growth -- this is exciting news." Construction was likely to begin in the middle of the year with completion targeted for June 2006.
