Online job vacancies rose a seasonally adjusted 2.3 percent in June, compared to May, with skilled vacancies up 1.5 percent, the Department of Labour says.
Its jobs online index shows the strongest growth in skilled vacancies was outside the main centres, with the South Island excluding Canterbury up 12 percent, and the North Island -- excluding Auckland and Wellington -- up 7.3 percent.
Industries with the biggest growth in skilled vacancies across the country included the accounting, HR, legal and administration category, up by 9 percent for the month, and hospitality and tourism, which grew 8.5 percent.
The number of skilled vacancies in the month of June was 17.1 percent higher than a year ago, while the total of all vacancies was 18.2 percent higher.
Department head of research and analysis Vasantha Krishnan said the figures showed employment prospects were continuing to improve.
"This is supportive of other indicators that point to a gradual increase in economic activity. It reinforces the department’s expectation that employment will grow in 2012 and 2013, bringing down the unemployment rate."
