Perth-based Foodland Associated (NZSE: FAL) has reported sales increases for the December quarter of more than 5% for both its Farmers Deka and Progressive supermarket division in New Zealand.

The company says sales at Farmers Deka in the second quarter grew by 5.6% outright to A$196 million and 2.5% on a comparable basis, although some sales transferred to new stores.

Supermarket sales rose 5.8% to A$328 million during the period or 6.1% on a comparable store basis.

Foodland says Progressive's Foodtown stores continued to gain market share. The company runs the Foodtown, Coustdown and 3 Guys supermarkets in New Zealand.

Wholesale sales in New Zealand were 14.5% lower for the quarter at A$81 million due to the sale of the Rattrays Cash and Carry business during the period.

The New Zealand operations of Foodland account for nearly two-thirds of the company's sales revenue with the rest coming from its Western Australian wholesale business and Action supermarket chain.

In the 2000 financial year the Group reported sales in excess of A$3.5 billion and had total assets of $1.37 billion.
