NZX Operating Metrics - October 2003

New Zealand Exchange Limited (NZX) releases its operating metrics monthly. They are issued on a preliminary basis and are subject to change.

NZX's operating metrics for the month of October 2003 are as follows:

Total market capitalisation was $48,776m compared with $43,702m for the same month in the previous year, an increase of 11.61%. Total market capitalisation for the previous month (September 2003) was $48,033m, an increase of 1.55%.

Total nominal value of NZDX was $5,599m compared with $4,436m for the same month in the previous year, an increase of 26.22%. Total nominal value of NZDX for the previous month (September 2003) was $5,562m, an increase of 0.67%.

NZSX50 Index Value was 2,307 compared with 2,000 for the same month in the previous year, an increase of 15.37%. NZSX50 Index value for the previous month (September 2003) was 2,281, an increase of 1.14%.

Number of equity trades was 53,698 compared with 40,739 for the same month in the previous year, an increase of 31.81%. The 12 month average is 45,692. The number of equity trades in the quarter to October 2003 rose 22.82% to 150,175 on the same quarter in 2002.

Number of debt trades was 3,178 compared with 1,669 for the same month in the previous year, an increase of 90.41%. The 12 month average is 2,086. The number of debt trades in the quarter to October 2003 rose 67.50% to 8,417 on the same quarter in 2002.

Value traded in equities (including rights) was $2,097m compared with $1,719m in the same month in the previous year, an increase of 21.95%. The 12 month average is $1,668m. The value of equities traded in the quarter to October 2003 dropped 8.99% to $5,622m on the same quarter in 2002.

Value traded in debt was $195m compared with $126m in the same month last year, an increase of 54.48%. The 12 month average is $145m. The value of debt traded in the quarter to October 2003 rose 51.57% to $652m on the same quarter in 2002.

The number of New Zealand Listed Companies rose from 153 in October 2002 to 161 in October 2003. While the number of Overseas Listed companies fell from 70 to 62 over the same period. There was 1 newly listed company in October bringing the total for the year to date to 14.

The number of different ordinary shares quoted on the NZSX was 190 in October 2003 compared with the same month in the previous year, a decrease of 5.00%. There have been 11 additions for the year to date and 15 removals. The number of convertible notes remained the same on 5 in October 2003 compared with October 2002.

The number of bonds quoted on the NZDX rose from 11 in October 2002 to 19 in October 2003, an increase of 72.73%. There have been 9 additions for the year to date and 2 removals. The number of capital notes also rose from 32 in October 2002 to 35 in October 2003.

The number of full NZX Firms was 16, unchanged from the previous month. Similarly, the number of Indirect NZX Firms remained unchanged on 11. The number of Non Trading NZX Firms also remained the same on 9.

The number of NZX Brokers remained unchanged on 279 in October 2003. Similarly, the number of NZX Associate Brokers remained unchanged on 185.

The number of Data Vendors also remained unchanged on 14.
