International passenger volumes through Auckland Airport were 9.2% higher at 595,000 in May, compared to a year earlier.

The airport said traffic from Australia to Auckland was up 8.5% last month, benefitting from additional capacity on the route between Auckland and Cairns.

Domestic passenger numbers through Auckland Airport were up 1.3% in May to 473,000, even with capacity 2.2% lower than a year earlier, Auckland Airport said today.

In January 2010, Auckland Airport bought a 24.55% shareholding in Cairns and Mackay Airports, while in July 2010 it bought a shareholding of nearly 25% in Queenstown Airport.

International passenger numbers through Queenstown Airport in May were 120% higher than a year earlier at 6668, while domestic passengers rose 11.7% to 52,400.

The rise in international passengers through Queenstown was on the back of a 50% rise in aircraft movements, mainly driven by Jetstar's expanded operations from last December, Auckland Airport said.

Rolling 12-month figures showed international passenger numbers through Auckland up 5.3% to 7.78 million, with domestic passengers up 1.1% to 6.08 million.

The rolling 12-month figures for Queenstown were international passengers up 55% to 160,900 and domestic passengers up 10.5% to 769,000.
