US markets closed lower on Thursday as investors assessed the latest batch of economic data and as Treasury yields steadied ahead of a key inflation report. Investors were also watching developments in Washington to see whether US lawmakers could avert a government shutdown. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 0.35%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were up 0.59% and 0.83% respectively.
Other key markets ended mixed. European stocks closed as follows: the FTSE100 (+0.11%), the Dax 30 (+0.70%), CAC 40 (+0.63%) and the STOXX (+0.72%). In Asia, the Hang Seng and Shanghai indices closed lower. The key Asian indices ended yesterday as follows: Nikkei 225 (-1.54%), HSI (-1.36%) and the Shanghai Composite (+0.10%).
The yield on the US 10 - year note was at 4.579%, while the 2 - year note was at 5.062%. Oil was down to $93.84 per barrel, up 3.84%. The gold price was at US$1894.10 per ounce, down 1.34%.
