Air NZ top job attracts suitors

There appears to be plenty of interest in the plum job of Air New Zealand CEO.

The airline is looking to replace long-time employee and chief executive Jim McCrea who announced his sudden departure on July 7. Air New Zealand's chairman, Sir Selwyn Cushing, is in the pilot seat in the meantime as executive chairman.

Air New Zealand won't say much about the appointment process, not even how long the search for a new CEO is expected to take.

But a spokesman does say the search is a worldwide one, and there have already been a number of unsolicited inquiries from interested people.

One aspect of the CEO search has centred on the influence Singapore Airlines, and its boss Cheong Choong Kong, will have on the appointment.

At the time Singapore Airlines announced it was increasing its stake in the airline to 25%, Dr Cheong said his airline "would like to be an active participant at Board level and work closely with Air New Zealand management to create growth opportunities".

The acquisition of the Brierley shares was expected to be finalised by the middle of this year but it's understood this has yet to happen.
