Telecom Corp.’s wholesale unit has signed up retail rival CallPlus Group for its third-generation mobile services.

CallPlus plans to use Telecom’s national mobile network to re-launch its mobile offering in a bid to win new customers, the company said in a statement. The telecommunications company has previously used Vodafone New Zealand Ltd.’s network.

“We have some big ambitions for driving growth in mobile services over the next few years and we believe the Telecom Wholesale team is the right partner to help us achieve these goals,” CallPlus chief executive Mark Callander said.

“Our aim is to make the move as seamless as possible for our customers and we believe that once they experience the benefits of the Telecom mobile network.”

Telecom’s mobile business will stay with the retailer in the upcoming demerger which will carve out network unit Chorus into a separate listed entity.

Under the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) agreement, CallPlus will offer Telecom’s 3G mobile services using its own CallPlus and Slingshot brands and provide its own support services.

Telecom’s shares fell 0.6% to $2.51, and have gained 15% this year.
