US markets closed sharply higher on Monday afternoon trading as investors were optimistic about the start of earnings season, with transportation shares advancing. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 0.93%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were up 1.06% and 1.20% respectively.
Other key markets ended mixed. European stocks closed as follows: the FTSE100 (+0.41%), the Dax 30 (+0.34%), CAC 40 (+0.27%) and the STOXX (+0.33%). In Asia, the Hang Seng and Shanghai indices closed lower. The key Asian indices ended yesterday as follows: Nikkei 225 (-2.03%), HSI (-0.97%) and the Shanghai Composite (-0.46%).
The yield on the US 10 - year note was at 4.70%, while the 2 - year note was at 5.101%. Oil was down to $87.02 per barrel, down 0.76%. The gold price was at US$1932.90 per ounce, up 0.44%.
