A seasonally adjusted net migration gain of 600 last month was unchanged from the gain in October, Statistics New Zealand (SNZ) says.

It was lower than the September figure of 1000 but above the recent low of 200, recorded in June.

Unadjusted permanent and long term (PLT) arrivals outnumbered departures by 1400 in November, down from 2500 a year earlier.

The main contributor to the decrease was 900 more departures by New Zealand citizens, of which 800 were to Australia, SNZ said.

There were also 400 fewer PLT arrivals of New Zealand citizens, offset by 400 more arrivals of non-New Zealand citizens.

Last month, there were net inflows of 1000 migrants from Britain, 400 from India, and 200 from China.

The net outflow of 1700 PLT migrants to Australia was up from 800 in November 2009, but down from the net outflow of 2600 in November 2008.

Following the Canterbury earthquake in September, PLT arrivals to the Canterbury region were down 16 percent last month, while PLT arrivals nationally were unchanged from November 2009.

PLT departures from Canterbury rose 32 percent, compared with a national increase of 24%.
