Our founder, Dick Smith, was an extraordinary man who saw the impact electronics would have on our lives and wanted to make them readily available to ordinary people.
He started the company by selling electronics equipment out of his garage. Dick Smith Electronics has grown enormously since then, with 400 stores in Australia and 65 stores in New Zealand, but Dick Smith's philosophy is still our driving force.
We pride ourselves on the fact that anyone coming into our stores will get the service they need from people who really understand the business, from the simplest gadget to the latest computer system. It's about know-how and passion.
In New Zealand, we're working to instil a passion for electronics and innovation into a new generation by sponsoring the wonderful Let's Get Inventin' television programme and the electronics industry's successful Bright Sparks programme.
Commercially, we already sell CDs and music DVDs in our Dick Smith Electronics PowerHouse stores, we sell thousands of MP3 players, we are a leading retailer of pre-paid phone vouchers in New Zealand and we've got one of the country's most successful retail websites.
So it's natural for us to be leading the way into digital music retailing. The emergence of the digital business has been the single most important development in the music industry in recent years.
This is an extraordinarily exciting time to be in retail; all the old rules are going out the window and we're reaching out to customers in ways we didn't think were possible not so long ago.
Unfortunately, some people have abused the technological revolution to exploit the work of others. Theft of music is one of those cases.
We are proud to be helping New Zealand musicians to combat the problem, and I know you will all join me in saying 'Don't rip it off, Ripit instead'.
