Salaries in Canterbury climbed an average 3.6 percent in the first six months of 2012, bucking the national trend, says online job advertiser Seek.

The average pay on offer for Cantabrians increased by about $2,000 to $66,415, based on jobs advertised on Seek, although the average value of those jobs remains below the national averge of $71,731, itself a rise of 1.4 percent over the first half of this year.

"Against a backdrop of global financial uncertainty, many companies here at home are treading cautiously when it comes to pay reviews and pay rises, reflected in the 1.4 percent growth in salaries nationally since January," said general manager Janet Faulding. "It's no surprise that salaries are up in the Canterbury region, given the strong demand for workers to support the rebuild.

Wellington also helped notch up the average growth rate, with salaries on offer for advertised roles rising 2.4 percent to $77,441. The capital now has the second highest wages on offer behind the West Coast, where the average of $93,515 annual salary reflects the mining industry's growth in the region.

Salaries offered in the Manawatu dropped 9.1 percent to $57,349, the lowest nationally.

Pay being offered to Aucklanders was little changed, up 0.8 percent to an average of $73, 297 a year.

Workers in mining, resources and energy had the highest salary packages on $113,939, followed by consulting and strategy on $89,793 and communication technology on $86,755.

Administration and office support workers had the lowest average salaries on $45,125.
