Former printing and publishing industry executive Rodger Shepherd has been named as chief executive of stainless steel manufacturer Mercer Group.

The company said the appointment came after Howard Milliner resigned after 14 years in the role.

The board of the Mercer Group was looking for a strong change in direction for the company and Mr Howard had agreed to step aside to allow this to happen.

Shepherd has previously held the roles of chief executive of PMP and deputy chief executive of the Fairfax Group in New Zealand.

Mercer Group has signalled a loss for the year ended June 30, 2011 in the range $2.6 million to $3 million.

The company has experienced weaker sales but expects an improvement as the Christchurch rebuild gets under way and housing construction lifts.
