Perth-based Foodland Associated (NZSE: FAL) has reported further sales growth for both its Farmers department chain and Progressive Enterprises business in the third quarter.

The company reports that sales at Farmers rose by 10.4% in the quarter, with same store sales up 6.6%.

Sales at Progressive's supermarkets, comprising the Foodtown, Countdown and 3 Guys stores, rose 14% in the quarter with comparable store sales up 10.1%.

FAL says a contributing factor was the improved contributions from the new larger Foodtown Takapuna store and Countdown Bayfair and Lynfield.

Progressive's wholesale business, including sales at the SuperValue and FreshChoice supermarkets, rose 7.3% for the third quarter on both an actual and comparable basis.

Foodland reported a sales increase over the entire group of 26% in Australian dollar terms with comparable store sales up 7.4%.

Late last month the company announced that it had renewed negotiations with Hong Kong-based Dairy Farm to buy the Woolworths chain of supermarkets in New Zealand.

New Zealand's Commerce Commission had earlier ruled against any acquisition but the basis for the ruling was overturned after Progressive appealed to the Privy Council.
