Competition from free ISP's like Clear's Zfree do not seem to be affecting the customer base of Telecom's Xtra - yet.

Xtra say that they have signed up over 9,000 customers in June - increasing the total dial-up customer base to 287,000. The ISP say that they expect the total number of customers to exceed 300,000 in August.

This equates to a market share of 49% in the consumer market - and Xtra say that they have now grown to hold a 47.5% share in the business market.

Customer sessions are averaging 480,000 per day, up from 283,000 sessions this time last year. This would indicate that Xtra's customers are still using the service instead of having inactive accounts, and surfing with a free ISP.

Clear's Zfree had already over 80,000 registered customers in June after launching in April this year. Another free ISP, Freenet, claims to have 50,000 customers.
