Sir Ron Brierley has retired as chairman of investment company Guinness Peat Group.

In a statement to the London Stock Exchange overnight, GPG said that, as previously foreshadowed Sir Ron would be retiring "as at close of business today".

He would remain on the GPG board as a non-executive director.

The new chairman is Mark Johnson, described by Sir Ron as having extensive experience and being highly regarded within the international business community.

Mr Johnson thanked Sir Ron for his "immense contribution to GPG during his 20 years as chairman".

An independent sub committee of the board continued to evaluate GPG's strategic options, Mr Johnson said.

The company had now established fully operational audit and risk, remuneration, and investment committees consisting of non-executive directors.
