Thistle Hotels hit a 12-month high of 157.5p, up 10.5p on the day, amid speculation that Brierley, its 46 per cent shareholder, has - at last - found a buyer for the company. The group has been up for sale for more than two years, and Nomura was believed to have had preferred bidder status at one stage before balking at the price. The aggressive venture capitalist group which bought Principal last week, is bidding for the hotels business of Compass, and may have taken another look at Thistle, according to gossips yesterday. Compass was off 9.25p at 542.25p, while cash-rich Bass, which was a second name tipped to buy Thistle, shed 6p at 758p.
