Comment sought on Telecom

The Government is seeking public comment on a three-way split of Telecom.

Communications Minister David Cunliffe has today released a consultation document on the separation of Telecom.

Telecom had earlier said it would divide its operations into two companies, retail and wholesale with the latter including its network.

But the Governmet is pressing ahead with a three-way split -- an access network services unit, a wholesale unit and a retain unit.

Cunliffe said the reforms were expected to deliver a "more effective telecommunications sector with increased competition and efficient investment in infrastructure and services for the long-term benefit of end users".

The public has until April 27 to comment on the proposal.
