Air New Zealand is reporting an 8.5% rise in passengers last month compared to August 2006.

Short haul routes had 6.6% growth and long haul routes 20.8% growth, the airline said today.

The group-wide load factor was strong during August, with 79.5% of seats filled during the month.

Particularly pleasing was long haul, which saw an increase in load factor of 10.7 percentage points, against a backdrop of a 4% capacity increase, the airline said.

Key network changes since August 2006 include the ending of flights to Singapore, and the start of services from Auckland to London via Hong Kong and from Auckland to Shanghai.

Short-haul capacity was 3.6% lower last month from a year earlier, largely driven by capacity rationalisations made on the Tasman, Air New Zealand said.

Domestic passengers were 7% higher in August than a year earlier, slightly ahead of a 6% increase in capacity.

The company's annual shareholder meeting is being held in Wellington tomorrow. Around noon today its share price was up 10c to $2.43.
