Contact Energy has added the head of its United States parent company to its board.

William Heller, the president and chief executive of Edison Mission Energy, will bring the number of Contact directors to seven.

Contact chairman Phil Pryke welcomed Mr Heller's appointment.

"His international experience and background in the energy industry provide a valuable resource for the company."

California-based Edison Mission owns 51 percent of Contact, and mounted an unsuccessful takeover bid for the New Zealand company earlier this year.

Contact also announced today that it had appointed Ernst & Young as its auditor for the next annual meeting. Its previous auditor was Andersen before that company merged with Ernst & Young.
