PowerbyProxi has appointed Marvell Technology Group executive Gani Jusuf to its board as the wireless power systems developer expands in a sector projected to be worth US$15.1 billion worldwide in 2020.

The Auckland-based tech developer is looking to secure a foothold in industrial and consumer electronics applications in the wireless power sector, it said in a statement. Jusuf is the vice president of engineering for Marvell Technology, a global digital communications and consumer electronics developer with annual turnover of US$3.4 billion.

"PowerbyProxi has the potential to play a lead role in the consumer space in the cellular market," Jusuf said. "Wireless power technology is still developing and has enormous potential to be a key game-changing technology for anyone who uses electronics on a day-to-day basis."

The company's wireless power technology, which charges electronic devices without cords, was first developed at the University of Auckland's engineering school and now has partnerships with Samsung Electro-Mechanics, TE Connectivity, Texas Instruments and Linear Technology, the company said. PowerbyProxi plans to open development centres in Taiwan and the US later this year, it said.

Chief executive Greg Cross is the former chair of New Zealand Trade and Enterprises' Beachheads, a private sector networking programme intended to identify international growth markets and boost kiwi exports. Ben Anderson, head of Beachheads in North America, introduced Cross and Jusuf in San Francisco during the America's Cup last year.

"New Zealand companies are beginning to realize the can play in a world class game," Anderson said. "To do so they must bring on international board members."

The company also appointed Michael Eckert as vice president of engineering. Eckert previously headed up Motorola's Silicon Technology development and was responsible for the commercialization of its WiMAX mobile and LTE chipset solutions.
