Market close: Shares close higher

The sharemarket rose slightly today with the NZSE50 up 0.86% to end the day at 3,353.

Top stock Telecom edged up 0.3% and Contact Energy added 0.1%, while Fletcher Building jumped 2.5%.

In the retail sector, The Warehouse Group had a slightly positive day, advancing 0.9%. Hallenstein Glasson closed unchanged, but Michel Hill lost 4.6% and Pumpkin Patch gave back 3.1%.

Other major gainers included L & M Petroleum up 12.5%, Hellaby Holdings 7.95%, Auckland International Airport 2.9%, AMP 3.7%, ANZ 3.3%, APN News & Media 4.9%, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare 3.3%, Goodman Fielder 2.3%, Sky Network Television 2.8%, and Steel & Tube Holdings 3.0%.

Among top losers, Dorchester Pacific dropped 40%, NZX slumped 5.0%, ING Medical Properties dipped 3.5%, and Air New Zealand gave away 2.5%, Ryman Healthcare lost 2.3%, Rakon dropped 2.4% and Mainfreight declined 2.1%.

Financials were on the rise, with ANZ up 3.31% and Westpac up 1.44%.

New Zealand's only listed carpet-maker Cavalier, gained 2.18% today, after it lifted annual profit by 17% as it acquired a business and sold more carpet tiles. Sales rose 22% to NZ$250 million.

New Zealand Oil & Gas dropped 2.47% today after announcing its full-year profit soared as production from the Tui oil field allowed it to benefit from rising global crude oil prices. As a result, the company will pay an extra dividend.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was up 69.1 points, or 1.4%, to 5,135.6, while the broader All Ordinaries Index advanced 72.2 points, or 1.4%, to 5,215.5.
