Asia calls for Air NZ

Air New Zealand (NZSE: AIRVA) is increasing its flights to Asia just weeks after cutting back its schedule to Australia and the United States.

The airline says starting this month it will operate additional return services between New Zealand and Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The airline's sales and distribution boss, Norm Thompson, says the additional services meet the need for additional capacity by Asian travellers and mark the expansion in Asia.

"This is good news for travellers to New Zealand and the New Zealand tourism industry and signals Air New Zealand's continued commitment to the Asian region."

The increased schedule includes a daily Auckland-Osaka service, up from six days a week, with weekend capacity upgrade to a 747 aircraft rather than a 767.

Services between Auckland and Hong Kong have also been increased to a daily flight rather than five days a week, and the airline will now fly between Auckland and Taipei three times a week instead of twice weekly.

Just last month the airline cut its schedule to Australia by 25% and between Sydney and Los Angeles by 40% following the downturn in travel demand caused by the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington DC.
