December 31st Morning Report

The US markets closed lower on Monday in light volume at the top of a holiday-shortened week in the second-to-last trading session of an eventful year in which all three indexes posted strong double-digit gains. 

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 0.78%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were down 0.87% and 0.91%.

Other key markets ended mixed. European stocks closed as follows: the FTSE100 (-0.35%), the Dax 30 (-0.38%), CAC 40 (-0.57%) and the STOXX (-0.60%). In Asia, the Hang Seng and Shanghai indices closed higher. The key Asian indices ended yesterday as follows: Nikkei 225(-0.96%), HSI (-0.24%) and the Shanghai Composite (+0.21%).

The yield on the US 10 - year note was at 4.549%, while the 2 - year note was at 4.256%. Oil was up to $71.92 per barrel, up 0.93%. The gold price was at US$2612.10 per ounce, down 0.38%.
