Blis Technologies named Fonterra Cooperative Group manager Brian Watson as its new chief executive, replacing Barry Richardson, who will leave at the end of the current financial year after nine years in charge of the probiotics manufacturer.

Watson, group manager preparedness and response at Fonterra, will start at Blis mid-February, the Dunedin based company said in a statement. Richardson said in August he was leaving to pursue other interests.

"Mr Watson’s related experience and overall leadership qualities convinced the board he would be the right person to lead the company through its next stage of development," said chairman Peter Fennessy. "Mr Watson’s strong sales and marketing credentials and experience are also important for where the company is going."

Blis has a range of probiotic products targeted at oral health, colds and flu and is focused on managing growth and continuing its strategy of securing regulatory approvals market by market.

Its shares last traded at 2.8 cents, and have climbed 47 percent so far this year.
