Air New Zealand has been quick to dampen the spirits of fledgling airline Qantas New Zealand, releasing data which shows more people than ever prefer Air New Zealand as their domestic carrier.

Qantas New Zealand only recently unveiled its kangaroo livery, taking over the mantle from Ansett New Zealand.

Air New Zealand says a September survey shows 61% of people would first make travel inquiries with its domestic service against 16% for Qantas New Zealand. In January Air NZ was at 57% versus 21% for Ansett.

The survey was carried out amongst 750 people by UMR Insight.

Air NZ says it is the best result for its domestic service since the comparative surveys began in 1992.

A third of survey respondents said they would choose Air NZ over Qantas NZ because it was strongly identified as a New Zealand company.
