Guest nights fell 2.3% in January from a year earlier, Statistics New Zealand (SNZ) says.
Domestic guest nights fell 2.6%, accounting for two-thirds of the overall drop, while international guest nights were down 2%.
Although lower than January 2010, the latest guest night figures were still 2% higher than in January 2009, SNZ said.
Bay of Plenty and Otago had falls of 7.1% and 3.6%, respectively, due to fewer domestic guest nights.
Auckland was the only region to show an increase in January, with domestic guest nights up 10.9% and international guest nights up 3.9%. The 611,000 guest nights in Auckland for the month was a record.
Holiday park guest nights were down 4.6% from a year earlier, and motels fell 5.6% in January from a year earlier. Hotels were up 3.6% and backpackers were up 0.3%.
