The Australian dollar rose mid-week amid market rumours German national airline Lufthansa was looking to buy a stake in national carrier Qantas.
The Australian dollar had risen as high as $US0.5916 on Wednesday up from a three week low of $US0.5860.
The rumours Lufthansa was interested in taking a stake in the Australian airline were denied by a spokeswoman for Lufthansa.
