The New Zealand Shareholders Association and NZX are partnering to enable public attendance at the Shareholders Association’s National Conference on 6 August in Tauranga.
The conference has an impressive line-up of speakers including Reserve Bank Governor Alan Bollard, the NZ Institute’s Rick Boven, ex Financial Markets Authority Establishment Board Chair Simon Botherway and fund manager/KiwiSaver provider Carmel Fisher.
“Part of the Shareholders Association mandate is to promote and contribute to financial literacy in New Zealand. Our members have enjoyed quality conferences for years, but until this partnership with NZX we have not had the resources to open it to the public in a meaningful way,” said Shareholders Association Chairman John Hawkins.
“Both organisations are excited at the prospect of creating a larger forum for members and public to hear and engage on a range of issues. This is a good example of the kind of cooperation needed to change the face of investing in New Zealand as we move forward,” said Hawkins.
Financial literacy in New Zealand is an area identified by the Capital Markets Development Task Force in 2010 as needing improvement. As New Zealanders’ KiwiSaver funds start to grow to meaningful amounts, overseas experience indicates they will want to take a more active interest in the performance of the companies they’re invested in.
“NZX is pleased to be part of a Shareholders Association initiative geared toward arming people with information and understanding they can really use,” said NZX CEO Mark Weldon.
