Auckland International Airport is to be part of a daily return Jetstar link with Singapore from March next year.

Subject to regulatory approval, the Qantas subsidiary will provide an additional 220,000 seats a year into Auckland through Jetstar's Airbus A330-200 aircraft, linking the city to multiple Asian and European destinations.

Jetstar's low-cost carrier network entered the New Zealand domestic market a year ago, and the latest announcement comes days after the airline announced an additional A320 aircraft to be based in this country.

"The low-cost carrier model is now being successfully applied to longer haul destinations, a very important development which we believe offers the New Zealand tourism industry a fantastic opportunity to link up with the rapidly expanding low-cost carrier network and markets in Asia," said AIA chief executive Simon Moutter.

"This news is very consistent with our own Asian tourism growth ambitions. It also offers a very differentiated and stimulatory service on a key route. This will not only benefit New Zealand tourism and trade but provide New Zealand travellers with greater choice."

Moutter said the new Jetstar services will support major New Zealand tourism initiatives including the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Auckland International Airport shares have risen 2.2% today to stand at $1.87.
