Wellington commuter bus services halted for stop-work meeting

Wellington commuter bus services were stopped for much of today as drivers met for a stop-work meeting ahead of plans to phase out trolley buses.

No 'Go Wellington' buses would operate between 9am and 3pm today due to an urgent Stop Work Meeting of the Tramways Union, which represents the majority of drivers, Infratil-owned NZ Bus said in a statement on its website. Reduced Valley Flyer bus services would continue to operate while Airport Flyer, Mana, Newlands Coach Services and school bus services were not affected, it said.

A decision to abolish Wellington's trolley buses in 2017, contained in the draft Regional Public Transport Plan, will go to a full meeting of the Greater Wellington Regional Council tomorrow for adoption. The council wants to move to hybrid diesel buses during the transition to an electric fleet. Its bus contract is currently held by NZ Bus.
