Air New Zealand's (NZSE: AIR) discount subsidiary, Freedom Air, has dropped some return airfares to Australia below $400.

The airline is offering promotional fares between Hamilton and Palmerston North to Sydney or Melbourne from $393 and Auckland to the Hunter Region is also priced from $393.

The airline says up to $80 has been cuts from its regular flights to Australia, with some prices only available between February and Easter, or between the end of April and June.

Freedom Air sales and marketing manager, Rachel Gardiner, says the airline's promotional fares make travelling between February and June ideal for those who want to save money and avoid the crowds.

Freedom Air is air New Zealand's value-based airline and does not offer traditional airline add-ons like inflight meals, inflight entertainment and frequent flyer programmes.

The airline also offers discount flights on New Zealand domestic routes.

Late last year Air New Zealand slashed a number of its flights to Australia in a response to a downturn in international travel caused by the events of September 11.
