The Commerce Commission is considering a merger of meat rendering plants.

Wallace Group has applied to buy up to 100 percent of the assets of Wallace Corporation, which has rendering plants in Waitoa and Hororata; Farm Brands, which has rendering plants in Timaru and Mosgiel; and Keep It Clean, which has a rendering plant in Dunedin.

Rendering is the processing of animal waste materials into products such as meat and bone meal and tallow.

"The merging parties are each involved in the purchase and collection of animal waste material (including the collection of shop and casualty material), the toll processing of animal waste material on behalf of customers supplying the material, and the sale of finished product produced from rendering," the Commerce Commission said in a statement.

A decision will be made by Aug. 8, according to the commission's website.
