Telecom (NZSE: TEL) has streamlined its operating structure, appointing chief operating officers for New Zealand and Australia and creating a new top job across the Tasman.

Under the new structure Simon Moutter, previously group general manager of networks, becomes New Zealand COO in charge of fixed line, mobile and esolutions businesses.

Chief operating office at AAPT, David Bedford, will expand his responsibilities to include the mobile businesses in that market, and for the internet service business of Connect.

Meanwhile Mohan Jesudason will move into a new leadership role for the mobile business in Australia, including Telecom's 3G alliance with Hutchison Whampoa.

"The new structure also creates a unified presence for the group in the Australian business market for voice, data and IP network services, with Graham Mitchell assuming leadership for Telecom in this area," says CEO Theresa Gattung.

However the role of COO for sales and service in New Zealand has disappeared and Ms Gattung says Kevin Stratful has left Telecom.

Ms Gattung says that along with a stronger focus on key business areas, the changes will support the company's ongoing drive to contain and reduce operating costs.

"Our consolidation of structure will enable us to build on all the progress to date in transforming Telecom into an Australasian online and communications group.

Telecom says the changes are aimed at promoting greater co-ordination between business units on each side of the Tasman and will help to speed decision making across the group.
