The overseas keynote speakers at the Baycorp Smartnet Workshops in Christchurch this month will all address the changed global business climate in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US.

The New York-based director of Trade New Zealand Jane Cunliffe is a late addition to the lineup with a focus on business trends and opportunities for small, agile companies.

Another US-based New Zealander, Andrew Lark, will speak in depth on "Brain gain and brand games" - how New Zealand-based companies can build global brands and gain advantages from the million-plus Kiwis who live overseas.

Mr Lark is head of global communications and corporate marketing at Nortel Networks.

A third overseas speaker, Steven Clift, is a world-leading expert on harnessing the internet to boost public involvement in democracy, governance and community activity.

He will examine the new security-conscious environment after September 11.

The main theme of the conference is Knowledge Navigators, which principal sponsor Baycorp says will provide what's required to take what New Zealand does well to the world.

"Businesses need the ability to alter direction and quickly capitalise on their capabilities," chief executive Keith McLaughlin said.

"If we are serious about New Zealand being a world beater, we need to understand the value of what we know and turn it into smart systems and practices to steer our way through. That way New Zealand can be at the leading edge."
