[sharechat] Stock Guru 2003, Feb Results Out
Results to the end of February 2003, representing five weeks of the
competition have been posted on the 'Competitions Message Board' and
it is not a pretty picture. All competitors and all brokers are
showing red ink which must be a kind of nasty first for any Stock
Guru competition I can remember.
Our competition leader is 'Johna' with his positive selections of
Contact Energy and Sky City Entertainment group not having quite
enough pull to haul his entire portfolio above the waterline.
The number one performing share out of the 59 selected over all
competitors was Vertex (+10.9%), after bouncing back from all time
lows to be part of a corporate share play.
Special mention must go to brokers Forsyth Barr who have the second
best overall performance behind 'Johna'. Albeit they are still just
in the red, but are ahead of all other sharechatters. The Forsyth
Barr portfolio of AIA, FBU, FPA, HLB and WAM doesn't have any big
winners in it, but neither does it have any big losers.
Perhaps a surprise number two amongst sharechatters is 'People's
Picks' (AIR, CEN, GPG, SKC, TWR) which is the combined wisdom of all
who entered. I say 'perhaps a surprise' because those who recall the
competition from year 2000 will know that Peoples Picks did very well
then too, at least for a couple of months, before it went into a
nosedive. One way of explaining this is to say that the collective
wisdom of sharechatters is very good at predicting what might happen
in the next two to three months but not so good after that. It will
be interesting to see if People's Picks follows that same pattern
this year.
Five weeks down, but still a long way to go!
