The ex in ex-dividend is derived from the latin prefix ex- meaning
without,.... in this case meaning the share is without the last announced
dividend.

The share goes ex-dividend when the books close (usually at close of trading
on a Friday). At this time the share register records the details of the
shareholders (following trades of that day) and they are posted their
dividend a few weeks later.  Therefore in the company's (annual/interim)
report there are two dates....

eg. Record date for dividend....[close of trade]     23 Nov 2001
      Dividend payment date   18 December 2001.

These dates are available for Access Brokerage Web Broker clients for each
share under the "Announcements" heading - a small icon (sheet of paper with
writing on it) beside the share name. Available from others also.
