sorry to continue this thread......

 

since when did the student loan scheme become interest free!!!!

 

i recall paying around 6% on my loan after i finished my studies and the rate of inflation during my studies...

 

things may have changed since '95.....

 

maybe the government should also consider giving interest free loans to new hi tech business ventures.. more upside in that than churning out more LLB and BA grads to an economy that has no jobs for them.

 

i paid my loan of a year ago. if the crackpot NZ govt decided to match repayments dollar for dollar or write off loans i will be the first to complain and ask for a rebate.

Tony, don't get me wrong.  I actively protest at our university AGAINST the protestors who argue for free education. 

Indeed I think the loans and allowances are more than generous. That said, if someone is going to establish a system that ENTITLES me to free moeny, there is no way I am going to turn down that entitlement.  As Phil pointed out, I doubt anyone's conscience would deter such behaviour. 

 

Further I would argue that taking government freebies and reinvesting them in the New Zealand sharemarket is good for all of us.  Yes - many of us would be better off if the government didn't redistribute away from everyone in the first place, but given that the government always has and always will, then the best course of action for me to take from your perspective is to invest the money.

 

Personally I can't understand those who don't draw down their entitlement even just to put it in a bank.
