Ports of Auckland plans to build a second inland port and have it operating by August.

The site is at Otahuhu, one of south Auckland's largest manufacturing centres.

The new site joins the company's existing inland port in East Tamaki, in line with its strategy to set up a network of container terminal and shuttle services in the Auckland region.

"We are determined to become more involved in the container transport logistics chain. Our purpose is to get closer to cargo owners and make it easier for them to get their containers to and from the seaport," said Ports of Auckland chief executive Geoff Vazey.

"The good news for Ports of Auckland is that we're increasing capacity without utilising expensive waterfront land. This means we can make better use of our port assets," he said.

Mr Vazey said importers and exporters were showing increasing interest in the inland port concept, since using an inland terminal had the potential to reduce container transport costs and was convenient logistically.

The Otahuhu site will operate within part of a 22ha container-handling area recently leased by Sky Group of Malaysia, who operate container facilities at Port Klang. Sky Group will provide transport, cargo-handling and site management services for the port company.
