Comalco New Zealand boss Kerry McDonald has been appointed chairman of mining firm GRD New Zealand.

GRD NZ is one of three subsidiaries of Perth-based GRD NL. The company says it generated more than $100 million in export gold sales last year from its Otago based GRD Macraes operations.

Mr McDonald is an executive director and deputy chairman of aluminium company Comalco NZ.

He is chairman of Bank of New Zealand, and a director of Ports of Auckland, Carter Holt Harvey and Owens Group Ltd.

"I have always enjoyed the challenge of resource based business and GRD provides the opportunity both at an operations level and as a service provider," Mr McDonald said in a statement.

He said he was also looking forward to being involved in bringing a world-class municipal waste solution to New Zealand.

GRD is developing an alternative system to land filling and incineration, and has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Christchurch City Council to explore the possible incorporation of a solid waste recycling facility.
