Tranz Rail (NZSE: TRH) is predicting a rise in coal traffic between the west and east coasts of the South Island.

The transport operator says the past year has seen a record 1.65 million tonnes of export coal out of Solid Energy's West Coast Mines in the South Island and that figure is projected to increase even further over the next year.

TRH spokesman, Steve Muir, says an agreement has been reached with Solid Energy to increase capacity to carry an extra 400,000 tonnes, promising further beneficial spin off.

"The company's Hillside Workshops in Dunedin are to build an extra twenty two hopper wagons that will be needed for the extra coal.

"Tranz Rail overall has been carrying an increasing amount of freight throughout the South Island and this is expected to strengthen with the current growth in the area of coal, dairy and forestry products."

The Lyttelton Port Company (NZSE: LPC) last week reported coal volumes through the port grew 23% for the year ended June but the improvement was not enough to offset flat volumes and lower average returns per unit of cargo in other areas of the business.
