Melbourne-based construction company McConnell Dowell (NZSE: MDL) has picked up a lucrative contract to help build a gas pipeline between Victoria and Tasmania.

The company says its Australian business, McConnell Dowell Constructors, has been awarded a contract by US energy giant, Duke Energy, to build the second stage of the Tasmania Gas Pipeline.

"This contract is the first awarded on shore stage of DEI's overall project to develop the 714km Tasmanian Gas Pipeline, which will transport natural gas from Longford in Victoria across Bass Strait and west to Port Latta and south to the Hobart area," McConnell Dowell says.

The contract is valued at around A$40 million.

McConnell Dowell's scope is to install a 241kilometre portion of pipeline between Five Mile Bluff and Port Latta.
